Smit & Co de haven binnenliep na een afwezigheid van vijf jaar. In optocht en begeleid door een muziekkorps liep men dan door Maassluis, hier ter hoogte van de Kippenbrug, om iedereen te laten delen van de vreugde. Begin juli 1945 was dat het geval met de sleepboot 'De Schelde' met als kapitein A. J. Vlielander. Een dag later kwam de sleepboot Thames veilig in de thuishaven aan met als kapitein B. 't Hart. Die twee kapiteins waren op dat moment de jongste en de oudste gezagvoerder van de Smit-vloot van slepers. Een paar dagen later was het weer feest, want toen kwam de Zwarte Zee met kapitein T. Vet, de Ebro met kapitein B. C. Weltevreden en de Seine met kapitein M. Becker binnen.

Op de achtergrond de restanten van de verwoestte Noorderkerk. Uiterst links het gebouw Varia. Het doelwit van het bombardement was de oliefabriek Witol in de Heldringstraatl. De meeste bommen misten het doel en kwamen terecht op het Schanseiland en in het centrum. Hierbij kwamen 18 Maassluizers om het leven.

Melkslijter Van den Berg, die zijn winkel had op de hoek Noordvliet – Lijndraaierssteeg, leverde zijn toestel niet in. Hij had een radio die provisorisch in elkaar gezet was door Paalvast van de Noordvliet en luisterde op een verborgen plaats naar Radio Oranje, waarop Koningin Wilhelmina regelmatig de vaderlanders in bezet Nederland vanuit Londen toesprak. Een groepje van 12 á 14 Maassluizers mocht bij toerbeurt met twee tegelijk komen luisteren. Niet te veel tegelijk want dat zou te veel opvallen. Onderling wisten de meesten van dat groepje het niet van elkaar. De foto van de luisterclup werd genomen ter gelegenheid van de bevrijding op het dakterras het platje boven de keuken en het pakhuis. Het moet enige moeite gekost hebben om een fotograaf te vinden, want camera's en al helemaal filmpjes waren gewoonweg niet te koop. Maar uiteindelijk drogist Jan Vrij van de Markt bereid gevonden een foto te maken.

Het door de bewoners opgeworpen dijkje blijkt sterk genoeg om het water tegen te houden. De voorste 2 jongens - rechts - zijn de neven Bart Veenstra en Bart Ohlsen.

De mijnen waren door de Duitsers in het Scheur afgeworpen om scheepvaartverkeer onmogelijk te maken. De BV 19a was met de goudvoorraad van de Nederlandse Bank in Rotterdam onderweg naar Engeland. Op 1 juni 1940 werd in opdracht van de Nederlandse Bank door W.A. van den Tak's Bergingsbedrijf begonnen met de berging van de goudstaven en het lichten van het wrak dat in twee stukken op de Noordoever werd gezet.
