Op initiatief van M.J.M. van der Hidde was deze krans vervaardigd door bloemenkoopman Kap (rechts op de foto) toen bekend werd dat deze dag het voedseltransport Maassluis zou passeren. Waar de man in die tijd en omstandigheden de fraaie aronskelken en andere bloemen vandaan heeft gehaald is een groot raadsel. Ook de grote rood-wit-blauwe vlag met de tekst erop zal wel moeilijk te krijgen zijn geweest. Alleen al het feit dat de Duitsers zo'n vlag in je huis vonden, was meer dan voldoende om in de gevangenis te belanden. De kapitein van de Lesto en zijn bemanning waren er in elk geval gelukkig mee.

Het bouwwerk aan de kop van het haventje is het in 1943 in opdracht van de Kriegsmarine gebouwde Minenlager. De zeemijnen werden via een smalspoor naar de laad- en loskade gereden om te worden overgeladen in de Schnellboote. De wanden en het plafond van het gebouw waren 2,5 meter dik, waardoor ze bestand waren tegen bommen van de geallieerden. Vanaf 05 november 1944 was hier ook het zogenaamd K-Flotille 261 van de Kriegsmarine met 30 Bibers (éénpersoonsduikboten) gestationeerd. Met een plafond en muren van 2,5 m dik was het voor de geallieerde een harde noot om te kraken. Bomber Command voerde aanvallen uit op 17 januari 1945, op 24 januari 1945 en op 3 februari 1945 waarbij Tallboy bommen gebruikt werden zie hier het resultaat op een luchtfoto van The Royal Airforce en vergelijk het met afbeelding A5750.

Op 3 februari 1945 krijgt een flight van negen Lancasters de opdracht met Tallboys (zie foto A7769) de basis van eenmansonderzeeboten in Poortershaven uit te schakelen. Het is een stralende winterdag als vele Maassluizers de Lancasters op grote hoogte vanuit het Zuidoosten zien naderen. Het is duidelijk waarneembaar dat juist boven Maassluis de bommen worden losgelaten. Er volgt een kakofonie van ontploffingen gevolgd door een luchtdruk die aan de westzijde van het Stort (Kromme Piersonstraat) vele ruiten doet breken. De ravage in Poortershaven is zo groot dat de onderzeebootbasis onbruikbaar is geworden en daarmede is de opzet van het bombardement geslaagd

De Duitsers lieten in de Tweede Wereldoorlog 'Sperrbrecher‘ voor een konvooi uit door een mijnenveld varen met de bedoeling om mijnen op hun pad te laten detoneren. In eerste instantie door geveegde mijnenvelden voor het geval er nog mijnen achter gebleven waren, maar ook werden zij door vijandelijke mijnenvelden gestuurd. De Sperrbrecher waren oorspronkelijke koopvaardijschepen die voor deze risicovolle taak waren verbouwd en uitgerust. De constructie van voorsteven en de romp was versterkt. In zekere mate waren ze ook bestand tegen akoestische mijnen. De ruimen waren gevuld met drijvend materiaal, teneinde het schip drijvend te houden als het schade had opgelopen. De bewapening was zeer zwaar. De schepen voerden meestal ook een ‘barrage balloon’. De sperrbrechers waren ondergebracht in ‘flottilles’. Het ligt voor de hand dat de Sperrbrecherflottilles grote verliezen hebben geleden. Deze schepen zijn door Jac Baart geïdentificeerd als Sperrbrecher 148 en 149, de gevorderde Nederlandse kustvaartuigen Goote en Strijpe. De identificatie is gedaan aan de hand van foto’s uit de verscheidene boeken die over de Kriegsmarine in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn geschreven. Het rechtse schip zou de Goote moeten zijn. Aan de hand hiervan kan de datum van de afbeelding vrij nauwkeurig bepaald worden omdat de Goote in september 1940 als Sperrbrecher in de vaart kwam en in december 1942 bij Den Helder is gezonken. De schepen maakten eerst deel van het 4. Flottille en later van het 8. Flottille in Vlaardingen, maar ze werden vaak ergens anders afgemeerd. Het behoeft geen betoog dat de bemanningen een enigszins nerveus bestaan hadden op die schepen. De Goote ruimde bijvoorbeeld op 7 augustus 1941 binnen vijf uur 9 mijnen en was toen zo zwaar beschadigd dat ze 7 maanden uit de vaart bleef. Op de achtergrond ligt het wachtschip Eisvogel de gevorderde Prins Bernhard.
